What is image enhancement?
Image enhancement is the process of improving how a picture looks without changing what it shows. That covers several distinct operations: upscaling to a larger pixel count, sharpening to recover perceived detail, denoising to clean up grain from high-ISO or low-light shots, and tonal correction to fix flat contrast or a colour cast.
Enhancement is not the same as adding information. Nothing can truly recover detail the sensor never captured, but good interpolation plus careful sharpening reconstructs edges convincingly enough that a 2x or 4x enlargement looks natural rather than soft and blurry.
Why enhance an image?
Most people reach for an enhancer because an image is too small or too soft for where it needs to go.
- Old family photos scanned at low resolution that you want to print.
- Product shots that look soft on a retina display or when zoomed.
- Screenshots and logos that need to be enlarged without turning into mush.
- Photos pulled from messaging apps, which aggressively downscale and re-compress.

How upscaling works: 2x vs 4x
Upscaling estimates the colour of pixels that never existed. The simplest method, nearest-neighbour, duplicates pixels and produces hard blocky squares. Bilinear and bicubic interpolation average neighbouring pixels for a smoother result but soften edges. A 2x upscale doubles each dimension and quadruples the pixel count — this is the safe, reliable setting and works well on almost any source. Upscaling a blurry or heavily compressed image 4x mostly enlarges its flaws.
Sharpening, denoising and restoration
Sharpening does not add detail; it increases local contrast at edges so your eye reads the image as sharper. Applied gently it is transformative. Applied heavily it produces bright halos around every edge and amplifies noise, which is why the tool exposes strength as a slider rather than a single button.
Denoising works in the opposite direction, averaging away random pixel-to-pixel variation. Too much of it turns skin and foliage into plastic. The best order is denoise first, then upscale, then sharpen — cleaning the source before enlarging prevents noise from being magnified into visible blotches.
For old photographs, restoration usually means a combination of denoise, mild contrast recovery and a light sharpen. Scan at the highest resolution your scanner allows before enhancing; a good scan beats any amount of processing on a bad one.
Supported formats and privacy
The enhancer accepts JPG, PNG and WebP inputs and exports PNG (lossless, best for further editing) or JPG/WebP when you want a smaller file. A before/after slider lets you judge the result against the original at full size rather than guessing from a thumbnail.
All processing runs in your browser on your own hardware. Images are never uploaded, so there is no queue, no per-image credit system, and no copy of your photo sitting on someone else's server. Larger images take longer simply because your device is doing the maths.
